Layla Fares
Layla Fares is a notable figure in Lebanese basketball, known for her remarkable journey from accomplished player to esteemed team manager. A prominent presence on the national team during her playing years, she brought skill, leadership, and determination to every game. Now, she continues to shape the sport as a team manager, inspiring a new generation of athletes.
What inspired you to start your sports journey in basketball?
What truly inspired me was the golden era of Sagesse Club, when basketball in Lebanon was reaching an entirely new level. Watching Sagesse dominate during that era especially after winning the Arab Club Championship and making history in Asia made me fall in love with the game. That period showed us all that Lebanese basketball has the potential to shine on the international stage. I was especially inspired by legendary players like Fadi El Khatib and Elie Mchantaf, who were icons of that golden generation.
I'm also thankful to Nizar Dagher, a sports teacher who believed in me. He convinced my parents to let me train with a club and join a team. His encouragement and belief in my potential gave me the push I needed. With his support and the constant support of my family I was able to grow into the player I am today.
What sports achievement are you most proud of so far?
Every achievement holds a special meaning and every championship I have won gave me a unique feeling. When you have a winning mentality, every victory or achievement brings a sense of satisfaction and confidence.
If I had to choose one that stands out, I would pick the achievements with the Lebanese National Team. It’s always a pleasure and an honor to represent your country. That feeling of belonging is something you can’t explain. Most remarkable to me were the Women’s Asia Cup in 2021, held in Jordan, where we were promoted to Division A, and the Women’s Asia Cup in 2023, held in Australia, where we successfully remained in Division A. Both were incredibly emotional moments for me, especially the 2023 tournament, as it was my last participation with the national team. That tournament marked the closing chapter of my basketball journey.
What advice would you give to young girls who want to pursue your sport seriously?
Always fight for your dreams, especially in sports and in everything that makes you feel strong, confident, and happy. As women, we will face challenges, unfair judgments, and a lack of support, especially in the world of sports. But during those times, believe in yourself. Be your own motivation. Keep pushing forward. Your dreams are worth chasing. With hard work and determination, you can make them come true.
What’s one small change that could make a big difference for women athletes in Lebanon?
Women in sports in Lebanon don’t get enough media attention or sponsorship. However, even with limited support, we are achieving great results locally and internationally. Imagine how far we could go if we had the support we deserve. It’s time to invest more in women’s sports and give women the attention needed to grow.
Where would you like to see women’s sport in Lebanon in the future (10-20 years down the line)?
I would like to see women's sports in Lebanon treated equally to men's: full stadiums cheering for women, TV coverage, strong sponsorships, and tangible investments. I would like to see more support from schools, clubs, and the government. Young girls in Lebanon should grow up believing they can be professional athletes, coaches, etc...
I hope that in the future, women athletes will be seen as role models and heroes just like male athletes.
How has your experience as an athlete shaped your professional career (team management) and influenced your perspective on motherhood?
My experience as a player helped me a lot in my new role as team manager. It helped me put myself in athletes’ shoes and understand their thoughts and feelings during practices and games. It helped me be a more supportive and empathetic team manager.
The ups and downs I faced as an athlete also influence my daily life. Sport has made me strong, confident, and emotionally tough. These qualities show up in my role as a mother. Motherhood has taught me how strong, caring, confident, and passionate a woman can be.
Bonus Question: What’s one thing people would never guess about you as an athlete?
This gonna be fun!
Before I leave the house, I go to my room and imagine my team losing by 1 point, there is no time left in the game, and I have 2 free throws.
I stand up and pretend I’m on the court and I'm scoring the 2 free throws.
Yesssss! We won!
